Our Top Choices on Natural Remedies for Children
It is important to all parents to make sure their children are healthy and safe. Unfortunately, we can’t always avoid the upset stomach or the inevitable sore throat. A parent’s instinct is to help ease their child’s discomfort. With all the many medications, pills and lab-made ointments, choosing the best option can be difficult. Sometimes natural remedies are more effective, with fewer side effects, consequently making them a healthier option. Below are a couple of natural remedies Tsi-La Organic’s staff has learned to love.
Chamomile Tea for Colic
Give your infant chamomile tea to relax intestinal muscles and spread a calming sensation. Steep tea for four to five minutes, let it cool to room temperature, and then put one to two ounces in a bottle.
Cayenne Pepper for Nosebleeds
This spice speeds blood clotting, and it has been used medicinally in cultures around the world. Add a little ground cayenne pepper to your moistened cotton swab and gently dab inside the nose on the area of the bleeding.
Fresh Ginger Tea for Car Sickness
Ginger stops the stomach contractions that signal nausea, providing your child with a little relief. For children 2 yrs old and older, add a teaspoon of shredded fresh ginger to four ounces of boiling water, and let it steep for four to five minutes. If the flavor is too strong, try adding a bit of honey to the mixture.
Cinnamon for High Blood Sugar
Cinnamon may have an active compound that works directly on cells allowing absorption of sugar. Cinnamon can lower blood sugar. Add it to your child’s meals and reduce the sugar in recipes. You can also sprinkle it on cereal. Just remember not to use it as a calorie replacement.
Apples for Nasal Allergies
A flavonoid found in apples inhibits the body’s release of histamines, which are allergic compounds that trigger increased mucus production, sneezing, and watery eyes.
Turmeric for Coughs
Turmeric is a good remedy for coughs due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral action. Mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and give it to your child to drink twice daily.
