Ingredient Spotlight: Jojoba oil
Why Did Tsi-La Organics choose Jojoba oil?
When we set out to create natural fragrances, they knew they wanted Jojoba Oil to be the primary base oil in their roll on perfumes. The silky texture of jojoba oil is the perfect base. Additionally, it soothes, conditions and restores elasticity to dry skin. Interestingly, the chemical composition of the liquid wax is so structurally close to the secretion of the sebaceous glands in the skin that it is readily accepted and tolerated by a person. In fact, people with psoriasis have found that it helps with their skin condition because the waxy oil acts as a barrier from external elements and helps keep in moisture for the skin.
What is Jojoba Oil?
The Native Americans initially discovered the importance and versatility of the jojoba plant. Later, Jesuit missionaries in Baja rejoin observed the Native Americans heating jojoba seeds to soften them. They then used a pestle and mortar to create a salve or buttery substance. The latter was applied to the skin and hair to heal and condition.
Jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) oil is the golden liquid that comes from the seed of the Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) plant, which is a shrub native to semi-arid and arid regions of North American and Central America, most often found in the southwestern area of the United States and Mexico. In reality, this oil isn’t oil, it’s a wax ester and is used in herbal medicine for many ailments.
The plant, itself, is dioecious, meaning the gender of jojoba plants can only be discerned from their flowers. When planted from seeds, jojoba plants can take up to three years to produce flowers. Once the seed from the female plant has fully matured and dropped to the ground, that is when Tsi-La Organics, takes the seed for their oil.
